SiteAdvisor was founded in April 2005 by a group of MIT engineers who wanted to make the site safer for your family and friends. Having spent too holidays trying to clean up a mess of spam, adware, spyware and our families' computers, we decided to take action.
We realized there was a huge hole in the network security products. While traditional security companies have received relatively good technique to address threats such as viruses, which were not in order to avoid a new breed of "social engineering" tricks such as spyware infections, identity theft scams, and sites which send Excessive e-mail.
To meet this challenge, we have built an automated testers continually patrol the Web to browse sites, download files, and enter the information on the subscription forms. We document all these results and supplement them with feedback from our users, comments from site owners, and analysis of our own employees.
Our easy to use software for Internet Explorer and Firefox summarizes the results of our security intuitive red, yellow and green ratings to help Web users be sure that search, browse and transact online. Our goal is to promote a new approach to security Web and make the Internet safer for everyone.
On April 5, 2006 we announced that were acquired by McAfee, Inc. Teams with McAfee will give us greatly expanded around the world reach, access to McAfee's leading security technology, and increased resources to accelerate development characteristic of many our users.
When you search with Google, Yahoo or Live Search, SiteAdvisor security appear alongside search results.
As you browse, a small button on your browser toolbar changes color based on the safety of SiteAdvisor results.
The options menu in the toolbar SiteAdvisor let you customize SiteAdvisor or view a site's detailed test results.
